In this work the implementation of a sampling filter as the central optic element of a Hartmann type wave front sensor is studied. The main characteristics of the sampling filter are shown, those characteristics are used in this case to explain and to understand the operation of a Hartmann sensor, which leads us to know the form of a wave front under study starting from the diffraction pattern that takes place when the wavefront goes through the sampling filter. Computer simulations that confirm the validity of this approach and its potential in the measurement of real wavefronts are shown.
